AS6081 Overview

AS6081: Fraudulent/Counterfeit Electronic Parts: Avoidance, Detection, Mitigation and Disposition

What is AS6081?                                          Submit Online RFQ

The AS6081 is a standard created by the global engineering association SAE International to provide uniform requirements, practices and methods for a higher level of protection against the purchasing and supplying of fraudulent/counterfeit electronic parts within the military and aerospace industries. The impetus for creating this standard was the increasing number of counterfeit electronic parts entering the aerospace supply chain, which posed significant performance, reliability and safety risks. The primary differentiator between the AS6081 and other standards is that it requires a larger sample lot size for most tests and inspections to ensure that substandard parts do not get overlooked during inspection.

AS6081 test methods:

  • Documentation and Packaging Inspection
  • External Visual Inspection
  • Solvent Remarking & Resurfacing Testing

  • Radiological Inspection
  • Lead Finish Evaluation via EDX XRF
  • Delid/Decapsulation Internal Analysis

Why is AS6081 adherence important?

As the most recognized and respected standard, adherence to it is required by the U.S. Defense Logistics Agency for distributors of electronic components. If your company is selling directly or indirectly to the U.S. military then products sourced outside OEM channels must be screened to the AS6081 standard. Adhering to this strict standard is also advantageous for electronic components intended for commercial or industrial use, because AS6081-compliant testing is considered one of the best ways to weed out substandard parts that could affect product or system performance.

Does ACT comply with AS6081?

Yes, Advanced Component Testing adheres to all aspects of the standard including sampling requirements and test and inspection method procedures and has even been certified to AS6081 test methods.* The U.S. DLA audited and granted ACT “DLA Lab Suitability” status in large part based our strict adherence to AS6081. ACT’s compliance with AS6081 is important in cases where our customer is a distributor, who must adhere to this standard.

* ACT is also ANAB-certified to AS6171: the corresponding SAE standard for test facilities. Learn more about AS6171 now.
